More Than a Well: Partnership, Cholera, and Floods in Zambia

More Than a Well: Partnership, Cholera, and Floods in Zambia

By EduDeo Ministries

At the heart of international development, there is a fundamental question: how do we ensure that a project doesn't just provide a temporary fix, but creates a resilient future? At EduDeo, part of the answer lies in our partnership model.

An Asset-Based Approach

We believe that local Christian leaders are the real experts in their own communities. By working directly with those who live and breathe the local context, we ensure that every project is both wanted and needed by the people it serves. This isn't about coming in with outside solutions; it's about an asset-based approach, which empowers schools to build upon the strengths and resources they already possess.

This philosophy aligns with the "Helping Without Hurting" framework, which prioritizes the dignity of the community and seeks to avoid the unintended dependency that can come from traditional aid models. When ownership remains in local hands, the impact doesn't end when the funding period does.

From Philosophy to Practice: Clean Water in Zambia

A powerful example of this philosophy in action recently came from our partners at Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) regarding a borehole project in Zambia.

Between 2018 and 2019, CCAP identified a critical need for safe, clean water as a cholera outbreak threatened vulnerable rural schools.  Generous EduDeo supporters came together to provide funding for a borehole well. Because this project was locally led, the intervention was timely and precise. The results were immediate: not a single case of cholera was recorded in the supported schools, allowing education to continue without disruption.

Resilience in the Face of Disaster

However, this project did not offer just a one-time benefit but continues to reveal the true value of a partnership-led project. Recently, the Lundazi District in Zambia was struck by unprecedented flooding that destroyed homes, crops, and even the main municipal water infrastructure.

While many were left without access to safe water, the CCAP schools remained resilient. The boreholes installed years ago continued to provide uninterrupted clean water, shielding students from the secondary risks of contaminated water. Not only the school benefited but members of the local community were also able to access this clean source of water.

"This project continues to deliver meaningful and sustained impact and community resilience in the areas we serve" shared Nehemia Mkwayi, EduDeo’s Southern Africa Ministry Coordinator.

Why It Matters

This story reminds us that when we invest in local leaders, we aren't just building infrastructure; we are building resilience. A project that began as a response to a cholera outbreak has now become a lifeline during a flood.  When you donate to EduDeo you can have the confidence that you are truly helping communities around the world.
